John B. Weldon, Jr. is a 1973 graduate of the University of California's Hastings College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, he joined the law firm of Jennings, Strouss & Salmon in Phoenix, Arizona where he practiced for 22 years until July 1, 1995, when he resigned to establish the law firm of Salmon, Lewis & Weldon, P.L.C. with Riney B. Salmon II, M. Byron Lewis, Stephen E. Crofton and Lisa M. McKnight. Mr. Weldon is listed in the 1993-to present editions of The Best Lawyers in America (Woodward/White, Inc.) in the categories for Natural Resources law and Health Care law.
Mr. Weldon's practice has concentrated on the representation of clients in water rights and natural resource related matters. He has represented the Salt River Project in the Gila River and Little Colorado general stream adjudications since 1977. In that capacity he has been one of the lead negotiators for SRP in resolving the water rights claims of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Fort McDowell Indian Community, the San Carlos Apache Tribe, the Zuni Indian Tribe, and the Gila River Indian Community.
Mr. Weldon has also represented clients on matters relating to the usage of Colorado River water in both the Upper and Lower Basins of the Colorado River. He has also represented utilities and water users' organizations in cases before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Weldon is a frequent author and speaker on Arizona water law and the Law of the Colorado River.
